A catch up with Mark Graham, Managing Director of Evolution Management Solutions. The company behind Great Park Community Centre
Evolution Management
What inspired you to start your own business and become the Managing Director of Evolution Management Solutions?

The inspiration to start my own business came when the building I was in place as centre manager faced difficulties with their long-term budget and operations. There were many companies involved in running the building, but we realised that a more bespoke solution was needed. They needed transparency and the ability to adapt to enable growth. After careful consideration, I decided to leave my promising (and stable!) job and start EMS Ltd. I haven’t looked back since then.

Can you describe the biggest challenge you faced when starting EMS from scratch?

The biggest challenge was becoming more knowledgeable in additional aspects of facilities management that I was unfamiliar with. Despite my experience in room hire, marketing, event management, and staffing, I had to put in a lot of work to learn the ropes of the contractor side of the business. However, I can now say that this experience has helped me so much now.

What has been the proudest moment so far with EMS?

Reflecting on what we’ve achieved after five years, I would say right now is my proudest moment. Our main client is doing excellently, and the future looks bright. I am also proud to have been able to grow the business and promote within my team. One of my current team is becoming the centre manager and I am going to take a more developmental role both within Great Park and EMS.

Can you tell us about your experience in FM prior to starting EMS?

I started as a part-time worker at a local community building, where I was the front line of customer service. When the building was closing due to council cutbacks, I was approached by the company taking over in the interim (before asset transfer) to help keep it running. I adapted the building’s charges, created a marketing campaign, and turned the building around. It was eventually handed back to the council running a profit and later transferred to a local business. I then moved on to a promotion within that company and eventually managed my own building, as well as several schools.

How does EMS differentiate itself from other facilities management companies?

I believe we are unique because of our inception and our delivery. It is rare for a new company to enter the industry without two years of experience or a prior history. Our customer service and delivery of service sets us apart from others – our willingness to go the extra mile. Customer service is often lacking in many industries today, but I believe that it is essential.

Can you share with us any projects or initiatives that EMS is currently working on?

I am currently working on a solar panel project that will provide a sustainable future and long-term financial benefits for Great Park Community Centre. Although it may not sound exciting to some, I am looking forward to seeing it come to fruition. I’m also keen to grow the EMS brand and client base with a few things in the pipeline on this side of things too!

What advice would you give to someone hiring their facilities?

My advice would be to keep consistent with your message and delivery. Consistency and hard work lead to success. I would also say get in touch with me and I can give you some more detailed advice.

What are your future goals for Evolution Management Solutions?

My future goals for EMS are to grow the business and its reputation. I want to ensure that any project we take on is the right fit, so that we can maintain our values and delivery consistency.
